내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라 마태복음 11:28-30
예수님은 수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들은 다 내게로 오라. 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라 “ 하셨다.
이는 메시야로서 하신 말씀이다.
지난 주일에는 신령한 사람이 되는 것이 최고의 축복이라고 말씀드렸다.
오늘은 예수님께서 우리에게 주시는 가장 기본적인 축복 곧 쉼에 대해서 말씀 드리려 한다.
여기서 쉼은 마음의 쉼을 말한다.
28 절에서는 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라 하시고 29절 절에서는 너희 마음이 쉼을 얻으리라 하셨다.
인생에게 가장 필요한 것은 마음의 쉼이다.
마음의 쉼, 곧 평안이 없으면 성공이 무슨 소용이며 돈이 무슨 소용인가?
그러나 역사상 그 누구도 참 된 마음의 쉼을 주겠다고 한 사람은 없다.
더욱이나 수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들에게 내게 오라. 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라“고 하신 분은 없다.
오직 메시야 이신 예수님 만이 우리에게 참 쉼을 주시기 위해 우리를 오라고 하신다.
하나님께서 천지를 창조하실 때도 인간을 창조하신 후 먼저 쉼을 주셨다.
6일 째 되던날 인간을 만드시고 바로 7일째 곧 안식일을 맞이한 것이다.
인간은 창조 되면서부터 곧 하나님과 함께 안식부터 했다.
그냥 하나님이 만드신 모든 것을 보며 즐거워하며 쉬는 것부터 했다.
예수님은 우리를 초대하시면서 먼저 우리에게 쉼을 주신다고 하신 것이다.
예수님께 와서 예수님이 이루신 모든 것을 받아서 누리며 감사하며 참된 쉼을 누려야 한다.
그 후에 사역이 따라야 한다. 쉼이 능력보다 먼저고 쉼이 사역보다 먼저다.
참 쉼을 위해서 어떻게 해야 하는가?
예수님에게 오라.
28절 수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아. 다 내게로 오라. 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라.
예수님은 우리에게 쉼을 주시기 위해 먼저 예수께로 오라고 초대하신다.
누구를 초대하시는가? 수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들을 초대하신다.
유식하던 무식하던 돈이 있던 없던 어느 시대 어느 인종을 막론하고 모든 조건을 초월해서
수고하 무거운 짐 진 자는 다 이 초대장을 받은 것이다
당신이 수고하고 무거운 짐을 지고 있다면 주님께로부터 초대장을 받은 것이다.
지난 금요일 빌리 그레함 목사님의 장례를 유투브로 보면서 은혜를 받았다.
그 장례식에는 오직 초대 받은 사람만 참여할수 있었다.
나는 그 초대장을 받지 않아서 모르지만 아마도 초대장은 “Dear ... 아무개” 라고 시작했을 것이다.
그런데 지금 여러분이 예수님께 받은 초대장은
“Dear 수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자, ” 라고 되어 잇다. 얼마나 놀라운가? 얼마나 감사한가?
여기 수고는 능동형으로 인간이 하는 모든 수고이며 무거운 짐은 수동형으로 죄로 인하여 물려받은 짐이다. 그러나 둘 다 분사형으로 계속되는 짐이요 수고다.
우리는 다 죄 짐을 지고 태어났다.
범죄한 아담의 모든 후손은 다 죄 짐을 지고 있다
인간은 빈 손으로 태어나는 것 같지만 사실은 태어날 때 이미 그 등에 무거운 죄 짐을 지고 태어난다.
그렇기 때문에 고금을 통하여 인간이 존재하는 곳에는 어디나 이 죄의 문제를 해결해 보려는 여러 가지 노력들이 여러 형태의 종교를 만들어 냈다.
불교와 같이 참선을 하는 종교가 있는가 하면 힌두교와 같이 소를 섬기는 종교도 있고 심지어 아프리카 어느 지역에는 자신의 애기를 강물에 던져 넣어서 신의 분노를 풀어보려고 하는, 즉 자기의 죄 문제를 해결해 보려고 하는 종교도 있다고 한다.
이것은 인생이 근본적으로 다 죄 짐을 지고 있기 때문이다.
이것은 누가 가르치지 않아도 양심을 지닌 인간이기 때문에 다 스스로 죄의 짐을 알고 있다
그러나 이 세상의 그 어느 종교나 철학도 죄의 짐을 해결해 주는 종교는 없다
죄의 짐은 오직 십자가 밑에서만 해결될 뿐이다.
죄의 짐을 해결해 주겠다고 초대하고 계시는 분은 오직 예수님 뿐이시다.
건강한 사람에게 의원이 쓸데없듯이 죄인을 위하여 오신 예수님은 이제 죄의 무거운 짐 진 자들을 초대하고 계신다
우리의 죄 짐을 해결해 주마고 초대하시는 분은 천상천하 오직 예수님 뿐이시다 할렐루야
이 초대의 말씀을 듣고 먼저 예수님께로 오라.
오늘 이 자리에 오신 것은 다 예수께로 온 것인줄 안다.
우리는 몸으로 먼저 예수께 오고 예수를 구주로 믿으면 죄의 짐을 다 벗겨 주신다.
결코 죄인이 어떤 노력으로도 해결할 수 없는 무거운 짐을 오직 죄 없으신 독생자 예수님이 십자가 위에서 해결해 주셨따.
예수님은 이 죄를 위하여 죽으시기 위해 살과 피를 입고 오셨다.
피 흘림이 없은즉 사함이 없느니라. 히 9:22
요일 1:7 예수의 피가 우리를 모든 죄에서 깨끗게 하셨다.
롬 5:9 “우리가 그 피로 인하여 의롭다 하심을 얻었은즉 ”
히 9:12 “ 오직 자기 피로 영원한 속죄를 이루사 단번에 성소에 들어가셨느니라.”
그리스도의 피가 단번에 영원한 속죄를 이루시고 하나님 앞에 나아갈 길을 열어 주셨다.
여기 모든 죄는 아담으로부터 물려 받은 죄와 우리가 과거의 죄와 우리가 앞으로 짓게 될 죄 까지 다 포함한 것이다. 예수의 피는 이 모든 죄를 다 깨끗게 해 주셨다.
여러분, 예수 그리스도의 피가 모든 죄에서 깨끗게 해 주신 것을 믿습니까? 할렐루야
* 죄로 말미암아 파생된 인생의 모든 수고와 무거운 짐을 진 자들을 초대하신다
죄가 들어오면서 수고가 들어왔다.
창세기 3:17
하나님은 범죄한 하와에게 “내가 네게 잉태하는 고통을 더하리니 네가 수고하고 자식을 낳을 것이라” 하셨고
아담에게는 “땅은 너를 인하여 저주를 받고 너는 종신토록 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라” 하셨다
범죄한 인간에게는 수고의 무거운 짐이 따르게 되었다
가난한 사람은 가난한 대로, 부자는 부자대로, 무식한자는 무식한대로 유식한자는 유식한대로 다 인생의 짐을 지고 있다
아담의 후손으로 난 자 치고 인생의 수고와 무거운 짐을지지 않은 자는 없다
모든 인생은 죄인이기 때문에 모든 인생은 그 나름대로 무거운 짐과 수고가 있게 마련이다
그것은 하나님께서 하와에게도 아담에게도 “네가 수고하여야 하리라” 고 하셨기 때문이다
하나님이 한번 말씀하신 것은 바뀔수가 없다
천년 만년의 세월이 흘러도, 문화가 아무리 발달되어도, 사회구조가 아무리 바뀌어도 하나님이 말씀하신대로 인생은 수고하여야 한다
예수님께 오면 예수님께서 수고를 쉬게 하신다.
예수님이 쉬게 하신다는 말씀은 더 이상 수고를 하지 않아도 된다는 말이 아니다.
죄 많은 이 세상을 살 동안에는 인간은 자기가 져야 할 짐을 벗어 버릴수는 없다
그러나 그 짐을 지고 살면서도 마음의 평화와 쉼을 주님께로부터 받을수 있다
예수님께 오는 자들은 인간으로서 해야 될 모든 수고와 인간으로서 져야 될 모든 짐을 지고 가면서도 마음에 쉼이 있고 가볍게 지고 갈수 있도록 해 주시겠다고 초대하시는 것이다
지난 금요일 빌리 그레함 장례식때 그의 셋째 딸의 간증이 은혜스러워서 소개하려고 한다.
그렇게 경건하게 늘 말씀을 읽고 묵상하는 가정에서 자랐으나 자기는 21 살에 이혼녀가 되었다.
인생의 실패자 라는 패배감에 허덕이니까. 가족들이 이사를 가서 새롭게 시작해 보는게 어떠냐고 했다.
큰 언니 집 이웃으로 가서 살면서 교회를 나갔는데 목사님의 소개로 이혼남을 만나서 데이트를 시작하고 급속도로 관계가 진전되었다. 그러나 자기 아이들도 반대하고 아버지도 어머니도 계속 전화가 와서 좀 속도를 늦추라고, 좀 신중하라고 충고햇찌만 자신은 거의 반항적으로 고집스럽게 나갔다.
아빠 엄마는 이혼녀의 심정을 알기는 해? single mom 의 입장이 되 봤어? 하면서 결혼해 버렸다.
결혼한지 24 시간만에 자신이 큰 잘못을 저지른 것을 깨닫고 5 일만에 도망치다 싶이 떠나왔다.
부모님 집으로 돌아갈 때 좌절감과 두려움과 죄책감이 말로 할수 없었다.
우리가 반대했쟎아? 좀 더 신중하라고 했잖아? 하는 책망이 계속 귀에 들렸다.
언ㄴ덕에 있는 부모님 집을 올라가는데 집이 가까울수록 발걸음이 무거웠다. 그런데 그 위에서 아버지가 그를 기다리고 있다가 두 팔을 벌리며 안아 주었다. 오직 하신 말씀은 사랑하는 딸아 welcome home 이었다. 책망도 수치도 정죄도 없었다. 사랑만 있었다.
그는 마지막으로 눈물을 흘리면서 이렇게 말했다. “ 내 아버지 빌리 그레함은 하나님이 아니다. 그런데 하나님의 사랑이 어떤 것인가를 보여주셨다.”
2. 예수님을 배우라.
29절 “ 나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니 나의 멍에를 메고 내게 배우라 그러면 너희 마음이 쉼을 얻으리라”
예수님께 와서 에수님을 배워야 한다. 예수님의 온유와 겸손을 배우라.
* 예수님의 온유를 배우라.
온유는 깨어진 사람이 갖는 마음이다.
예수님은 팔복에서 가난한 심령, 애통하는 심령, 그리고 그 다음에 온유한 심령을 말씀하셨다.
이는 순서적으로 말씀하신 것이다. 먼저 심령이 가난해지고 애통한 후에 온유한 심령을 가질수가 있다.
온유는 깨어진 심령이 갖는 것이기 때문이다.
온유는 잘 훈련 받은 자의 마음이다.
아무리 타고난 성품이 좋아도 깨어지고 훈련을 통해서만이 온유한 마음을 가질수가 있다.
어떤 사람은 본성은 좋지만 훈련되지 않아서 웬지 불편한 사람이 있다.
우리는 훈련을 잘 받아야 한다.
가정생활에도 사회생활에도 훈련이 필요하다.
교회생활도 훈련이 필요하다. 은혜를 받았다고 다 된 것이 아니다.
고난을 통해서 깨어질 뿐 아니라 잘 훈련된 사람이 직장에서나 교회에서나 자신이 편안하고 다른 사람도 편안하게 해 줄수 있다.
모세는 그 온유함이 온 지면에 가득찼다고 했다.
모세도 깨어지고 훈련을 통해서 온유해진 것이다.
우리는 예수님의 온유를 배우기 위해 깨어지고 훈련되어야 한다.
* 예수님의 겸손을 배워야 한다.
예수님의 겸손은 낮아지심이다.
하늘 보좌를 버리시고 사람과 같이 되시고 종의 형체를 입기까지 겸손하셨다.
예수님의 겸손은 순종하심이다. 예수님은 죽기까지 복종하셨다.
예수님은 아들이라도 고난을 통해서 순종을 배우셨다. (히 5:8)
우리도 순종을 배워가야 한다.
순종은 삶으로 배우는 것이지 이론적으로만 배울수 있는 것이 아니다.
순종하기 어려운 것도 순종하는 삶을 계속적으로 살면서 배워야 한다.
순종은 하루 아침에 배우는 것이 아니다. 일생을 통해서 배워야 한다.
예수님의 겸손은 섬기심이다.
예수님은 “인자의 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니오 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이라” 고 하셨다. 막 10:45
예수님은 몸소 섬김을 제자들에게 보여주셨다.
제자들의 발을 씻어 주시면서 섬김을 가르쳐 주셨다.
그러시면서 예수님은 내가 스승이 되어 너희를 이렇게 섬겼으니 너희도 서로 섬기라고 하셨다.
섬김 역시 훈련을 통해서 더 잘하게 된다.
처음에는 억지로 하고, 다음에는 습관적으로 하고 ..그러다 보면 섬김의 마음이 생긴다.
우리는 예수님의 온유와 겸손을 배워야 한다.
가장 잘 배우는 길은 함께 사는 것이다.
3. 예수님과 함께 살아라.
30 “이는 내 멍에는 쉽고 내 짐은 가벼움이니라 ”
예수님을 배우는 것은 예수님과 함께 살면서 배울수 있다.
원래 멍에는 한 켜레의 소, (한 쌍의 소) 가 함게 메도록 되어 있다
그러므로 멍에를 함께 매게 되면 행동을 따로 할 수가 없다
예수님과 함께 멍에를 메는 것은 예수님과 함께 동행하는 삶을 뜻한다
우리가 남남이 만나서 부부가 되어서 서로를 배우고 알게 되는 것은 함께 살아가는데서 배우게 된다
옛 말에 한 솥의 밥을 먹어 보아야 진짜 상대방을 알수 있다 는 말이 있다.
십년을 친구로 가까이 지내도 막상 한 집에서 한 솥의 밥을 먹으며 함께 살아야 서로를 알고
서로를 배울수 있다는 것이다.
우리가 예수님의 멍에를 같이 메고 예수님과 함께 사는 삶을 통해서 예수님을 진짜 배우게 된다
* 예수님의 멍에는 가볍다.
예수님과 함께 살면 예수님이 다 해 주시고 우리는 쉴 수 있다.
멍에는 주로 소 한켜례, 즉 한 쌍의 소가 메도록 되어 있다 그런데 멍에는 그 무게를 같게 하지 않고 한 쪽은 무겁고, 한 쪽은 가볍다 그래서 무거운 쪽은 건강하고 힘있는 소에게 메게 하고 가벼운 쪽은 약한 소에게 메게 한다
그러면 사실은 건강한 소가 거의 다 메고 가는 셈이다 그런데도 이상한 것은 건강한 소, 혼자에게만 메게하고 짐을 운반시키면 그 소는 힘을 쓰지 않는다 약한 소가 옆에 붙어 있으면서 함께 그저 메는척 하면 건강한 소는 힘을 내어서 잘 메고 간다.
우리가 온유한 마음을 가지고 주님과 함께 주님의 멍에를 메고 가면 얼마나 쉬운지 그저 주님이 다 끌어가시고 우리는 흉내만 내게 된다.
그저 주님의 기분만 맞춰 드리면 된다 그저 주님을 쳐다보고 좋아 하기만 하면 된다
멍에는 주님이 다 끌어가신다. 마나 수지 맞는 일인가!
* 예수님과 함께 멍에를 메기 위해서 고개를 숙여야 한다.
소에게 멍에를 메우려고 할 때 소는 고개를 숙여야 한다.
고개를 숙이고 온유해져야 한다. 그것은 바로 주님의 뜻이라면 순종하겠다는 마음의 자세이다
그러나 거역의 영이 있으면, 목이 곧고 뻣뻣해서 우리는 주님의 멍에를 멜수가 없다
주님의 뜻을 전적으로 순종하려는 온유한 마음, 그 마음이 있을 때
주님의 멍에는, 주님의 뜻을 행하는 것은 쉽고 가볍다 결코 어려운 것이 아니다
사실 하나님의 뜻을 분간하거나 그 뜻을 순종하기가 어려운 것이 아니다
순종하겠다는 온유하고 겸손한 마음을 가지기만 하면 하나님의 뜻은 순종할수 잇다
그래서 성경은 “사람이 내 뜻을 순종하고저 할진대 그 뜻을 알리라”고 하셨다
온유한 사람 옆에 있기만 해도 마음엥 쉼이 온다.
겸손한 사람 옆에 그냥 있기만 해도 마음에 평화가 온다.
하물며 주님과 함께 살면서 주님의 온유와 겸손을 배우다 보면 나도 모르게 진정한 쉼을 누리게 된다.
그 쉼은 단순히 문제가 없어져서 누리는 쉼이 아니다. 걱정리가 없어져서 누리는 쉼이 아니다.
우리 영혼 깊은 곳에서부터 울어나는 평안과 안식이다.
오늘 예수님께 나온 여러분들에게 주님이 그 평안을 주실 것이다.
이 시간 주님께서 여러분의 모든 인생의 수고와 짐을 가볍게 하시고 참 쉼을 주실 것을 믿어라.
수고하고 무거운 짐 진자들아. 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라 아멘?
Come to me, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28-30)
Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
He proclaims that word with Messiah’s authority.
Last Sunday, I shared the message of why being a spiritual man is the best blessing.
Today, I am going to share on the most foundational and basic blessing, a life of rest in Jesus.
When Jesus talks rest about, it is about a rest for our soul.
In verse 28, Jesus says, “I will give you rest”, and then in verse 29, he says, “you will find rest for your souls.”
The rest of the soul is what we need the most in life.
If we do not have the rest of the soul, that is peace, then what is the point of making success and money?
But, in the history of humankind, nobody promised to give rest for the soul.
Needless to say, nobody commanded in such a confidence and authority as Jesus: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Only Jesus the Messiah invites us to a true rest of our souls.
When God created heavens and earth, God gave the rest right after the creation of human being.
On the sixth day, God creates a man and a woman, then on the next day, God declares Sabbath.
This means that the first thing human-being did was to rest with God.
They just had rest and enjoyed the world God created.
When Jesus invites us, the first thing He promises is rest.
We are called to receive what Jesus accomplished for us and give thanks to him, and rest in Jesus.
The ministry comes next. Rest comes first, then ability. Rest should be first, then ministry.
Then, what is needed to have a true rest?
“Come to Jesus.”
In verse 28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Jesus says, we have to come to Jesus first to have rest in our souls.
Whom does he invite? All who are weary and burdened Jesus invites.
Intelligent or ignorant, rich or poor, no matter what era you are born in, no matter what skin color you have, we all are invited to Jesus.
If you are weary and heavy burdened, you received his invitation already.
On last Friday, I was deeply moved by what’s being said in Rev. Billy Graham’s Funeral.
Only those who are invited were allowed to attend his funeral.
I don’t know what the first line of invitation would say, but I guess it would start with the line like, “Dear …”
However, the invitation you just received from Jesus says, “Dear all who are weary and burdened”
How amazing is this grace?
In this verse, the word “weary” describes the state we are in when we do all kinds of works and labors with our “conscious and active” choice. And the word “burdened” describes the state when we carry the weight of our life without our choice.
No matter how we are carrying the burden, actively or passively, there is no difference in the fact that we are carrying heaviness of our lives.
We all are carrying the weight of sin.
All the descendent of Adam are under the yoke of sin and misery.
It seems that we are born with empty hands, however, there already is a heavy weight of sin on our shoulders.
That’s why all kinds of religious institutions were devised to resolve the issue of human sinfulness.
Buddhism regulates its followers to follow the path of Zen, seeking Nirvana. Hinduism teaches its followers to worship the cow. In a certain region of Africa, there is a religion that recommends it, followers, to throw papers with a life story to subdue god’s wrath.
Why do people practice these kinds of religious rules? It’s all because we are under the yoke of our sin.
No need to be taught, we all recognize our own sinfulness by the testimony of conscience.
However, no secular religion can promise that it can solve the problem of sin.
The burden of sin only can be taken away under the shadow of the cross.
Only Jesus promises that he will carry our burden of sin.
Jesus who says, “It is not healthy who need a doctor, but the sick” invites those who are weary with the burden of sin.
There is no other one but Jesus who invites and promises us to take our burden of sin.
Come to Jesus when you hear this word of invitation.
Jesus is the one who brought you all here.
We come to Jesus with our bodily presence, then, Jesus carries all our spiritual burdens of sin when you receive him as your Lord and savior.
No sinner can solve the problem of sin with one’s own effort but the only and begotten Son of God, Jesus clears the obstacle of sin for those who believe.
Jesus came to us with flash and blood to be with us.
Hebrews 9:22 reads, “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”
1John 1:7 reads, “The blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”
Romans 5:9 says, “We have now been justified by his blood.”
Hebrews 9:12 says, “He entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.”
The blood of Jesus Christ made the way to eternal redemption and the peace with God once for all.
Here, the sin Jesus washes includes original sin we inherited from Adam and all the sins we will commit in the future. Jesus washes all our sin away.
Dear believers and saints, do you all believe the blood of Jesus Christ washed us from all our sins? Hallelujah!
* Jesus invites us who and weary and heavy-burdened with the heavy labor of life caused by our sin.
Sin brought toil and labor.
In Genesis 3:17
God says to Eve, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor, you will give birth to children.”
And God said to Adam, “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil, you will eat food from it all the days of your life.”
Sinful human being is now under the yoke of heavy labor and painful toil.
No matter you are rich or poor, intelligent or ignorant, all men are carrying the heavy weight of life.
There is none who is not carrying the burden of labor and toil because we are all descendent of Adam.
We are all sinners, and as a result, there are burdens we carry.
God says Adam and his wife that “Through painful toil, you will eat.”
When God declares, his decree is eternal.
No matter how many years pass, thousands of years cannot change anything. No matter how civilization develops, or social change is made, we should toil painfully as God declared.
When we come to Jesus, Jesus ends or toil.
When Jesus says He will make us rest, it does not mean that we do not have to work at all.
While we are living in this sinful world, humankind cannot take away the burden.
But, when we come to Jesus we can reach to the peace of our soul even when we still carry the burden of our life.
What Jesus means is that Jesus will give us the rest of our souls and the ability to carry the burden lightly even if we still have to carry the burden of our life.
Last Friday, at the funeral of Rev. Billy Graham, his third daughter shared a gracious testimony about his father.
She was born and raised in the devotional household where the Bible is read and meditated on the daily basis in the family gathering, however after 21 years her marriage ended in divorce she was devastated and she floundered. She did a lot wrong the rug was pulled out from under her. And her family thought it'd be a good idea for her to move away to get a fresh start somewhere else so she decided to live near her older sister and her family. And the pastor of that church introduced her to Hanson widower and they began to date fast and furiously her children didn't like him but she thought she knows they were almost grown they didn't know what they could. She thought they couldn't tell her what to do. She believed that she knew what was best for her life. But her mother called me from Seattle and her father Billy Graham called her from Tokyo saying, “honey why don't you slow down.” Still, she refused to listen and thought “they had never been a single parent they had never been divorced what did they know”. So being a stubborn willful and sinful she says, she married this man on New Year's Eve and within 24 hours she knew she had made a terrible mistake. After five weeks she fled she was afraid of what she would tell her parents, feeling herself being such a failure and disappointment to parents. Her parents live on the side of a mountain and as she wound herself up the mountain I rounded the last bend in her father's driveway and Billy Graham was standing there waiting for her as she got out of the car he wrapped his arms around her and he said: “welcome home.” There was no shame there was no blame there was no condemnation just unconditional love. She said, “You know my father was not God but he showed me what God was like that day. When we come to God with our sin our brokenness our failure our pain in a hurt God says a welcome home and that invitation is open to you.”
2. Learn From Jesus
Verse 29 says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. “
You must learn from Jesus, His humility, and gentleness.
* Learn his meekness.
Meekness is a heart you have when you are broken hearted.
In the beatitudes, Jesus talks about those who are poor in spirit and those who mourn, and then those who are the meek.
These characters are logically placed in order. Only when you become poor in spirit, then you can truly mourn, and then you can be the meek because the meekness is out of the broken heart.
The meekness is a result of training and test.
No matter how good your natural character you are born with, only the character that’s been through test can contain true meekness.
Some people have a good character by their born nature, however, they make people uncomfortable because their natural character had never been through the test.
We should go through the test.
In our social life and family life, we need training.
In our church life, we need training. Believing in Christ is not a finish line of our faith journey.
Only when you go through test and trial, and become a person who can understand who are broken hearted, then you can bring peace and comfort to those who are broken-hearted.
Bible says, Moses was meeker than any other man on the face of the earth.
Moses also had been through test and trial and became meek.
Our ego also must be broken through test and trial so that we truly resemble Jesus who are meek.
* We should learn humility of Jesus.
Jesus’ humility is about lowering himself.
Jesus made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
That was the humility of Jesus.
The essence of Jesus’ humility is his obedience. Jesus obeyed to the point of cross and death.
“Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered” (Hebrews 5:8)
We should learn obedience. Obedience cannot be learned by idea and theory but only by living life in it.
There is something that is hard for us to obey, but with training and living life in faith, we can learn the obedience. It is a life-long process.
Jesus’ humility is to serve others.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
Jesus himself showed how to serve others.
Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, saying that they should serve each other just as Jesus himself who is the teacher served them.
Serving life can also be trained.
First by force, second by habit, than by true heart of service, we slowly learn how to serve.
We should learn his meekness and humility.
Best way to learn them is to live together.
3. Live with Jesus.
“For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30)
You learn how to live like Jesus by living with Jesus.
The yoke is carried by a pair of oxen.
So, if two oxen are under the same yoke, they cannot move independently.
Living a life under the same yoke with Jesus is to live life with Jesus walking tightly together.
When you marry you learn how to live together by living together.
There is a saying that only by living together you can learn who they are.
You can learn Jesus truly when you truly live and walk together with Jesus.
* Jesus’ yoke is easy.
When we are under the yoke of Jesus we can rest because Jesus carries the weight of yoke.
When the yoke is carried by a pair of oxen, the most of weight is put on the taller and stronger ox while shorter and weaker ox just follow the track together.
That’s how Jesus carries the most of weight on his shoulder and we just follow. For Jesus carries the weight on himself, even though it seems that we follow him, we don’t carry the weight.
All we should do is to follow him and enjoy the journey with Jesus and praise him.
*To be under the yoke of Jesus we should bow down.
That means that we should learn humility and meekness to walk along with Jesus.
When our ego is still alive, we cannot be under the yoke.
However, when we are humble and meek we can be there.
Indeed, discerning God’s will and following it is not difficult.
When we have a will to follow with humble and meek heart, we can obey his will.
Thus, Bible says, “When a person is willing to obey God’s will, then you will realize God’s will.”
You can take a rest only by being together with who are meek.
You can have a peace only by being together with who are humble.
It is obvious that you will enjoy the genuine rest when you follow Jesus who is meek and humble.
The rest is not about getting rid of problems. It is about having a peace while you are in the storm.
Jesus gives you all the peace that endures forever and that overcomes all the burdens of life.
Come to me, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28-30)
